" it begins with you"- 19th Rotary District Conference


The conference will commence with a spectacular opening ceremony at 4.00 pm on the 19th March 2010 and a host of eminent speakers have been invited from various countries to speak throughout the conference. The District Conference will be an opportunity for all Rotarians to meet old acquaintances, learn about new developments in Rotary and most importantly reaffirm your beliefs in becoming a Rotarian. The culmination of the District Conference is the Fiesta. The fiesta is designed to be the ultimate outdoor experience. Fiesta will be based on a carnival theme and includes a gala food festival, fashion show, music, entertainment, games of skill ,a stunning firework display and many surprises. Fiesta venue will be notified to you soon.


The home hospitality and transport programme will be in effect for all those who require them and confirm prior 30th Jan 2010. Conference registrations counter will be open on the 15th of November during the Leadership Seminar to be held at the Excel World , Colombo. PRE–SCHOOL TEACHER TRAINING PROGRAMME, FOR TEACHERS IN THE KOPAY DIVISION IN JAFFNA


The Rotary Club of Colombo East, responded to a request to conduct a 7 day training programme for pre-school teachers in the Kopay division in Jaffna. A total of 174 teachers voluntarily contribute their time and effort to train pre-school children selflessly. Pre-school education is not supported by the government and these teachers depend totally on the contributions received from the parents of these children.

The programme was designed to cover a general training of 2 days for all teachers and a comprehensive, 5 day training for 51 teachers who have never received any form of training in pre-school teaching.

District Governor Suri Rajan inaugurated the training program on the first of November 2009, during his recent visit to Jaffna. The program was sponsored by Rotary Colombo East and was initiated and co-ordinated by PP. Dharshan John, District Chairman , Community service.

In addition to the DG, PDG’s Gaje, Krish, President Mahilnan, PP. Shan and Rtn’s. Sampath, Jeyaraj and Vijeyawel of Colombo East traveled all the way to Jaffna and attended the inauguration ceremony.

The Zonal Director of education Jaffna, Mrs. Vethanayagam, co-ordinated the resource personnel and the training. The teachers who underwent training will be awarded with a certificate signed by the department of education and Rotary Colombo East.

ANNOUNCEMENTS FROM THE DISTRICT SECRETARY

DG's Official Visit to RC Jaffna on the 31st October

DG Suri has organized a 50 seater luxury bus leaving Colombo at 4pm to on the 30th October (Friday) to Anuradapura and leaving Anuradapura at 6am on the 31st to Jaffna along the A9 road. The bus will depart Jaffna on the 1st November, late morning to return to Colombo on the same route. Those who wish to join this tour can board the bus either from Colombo, Anuradapura or any city en-rout to Anuradapura. If any of your club members wish to join this tour, kindly give your names to DG Suri on or before 15th October, 2009.

District Leadership Training Seminar - 15th November

The above Seminar will be held on 15/11 commencing at 9am at the Excel World Auditorium, Colombo 10. This event will be organized by the RC of Colombo South.

District Service Projects Seminar - 6th December

The above Seminar will be held on the 6/12 commencing at 9am at the Kandyan Arts and Crafts Centre, Kandy. This event will be organized by Rotary Kandy Heritage.

District Conference 2009/10 - 19th/20th March, 2010

The District Conference will be held at the Water's Edge, Battaramulla on the 19th March commencing at 4pm and on the 20th concluding with a Grand Fiesta organized by RC of Colombo West. The Conference Committee is organizing Home Hospitality for outstation Rotarians. Kindly make use of the Early Bird registrations and please be mindful of the District Citation mandatory applicable for Conference registrations.

Attendance Reporting

As per the September, 09 GML, 25 clubs out of 66 in our District did not either report attendance or send it by the due date which is 15th of the following month to the District Chairman - Attendance PP Rohan Amirthiah. As at 10th Oct, only 10 clubs have reported attendance for the month of September. Please follow up with your Club Secretaries to have this report sent on time.

RI Semi Annual and District Dues

Many clubs of our District has still not paid both the Semi Annual dues and or the District Dues. Non payment of RI dues will result in suspension of your clubs by RI. District dues which is Rs. 700 per member will have to be paid to District Treasurer S. Mahendrarajah at your earliest.

Inbound GSE Teams

Two inbound GSE Teams from UK and Mumbai, India will be visiting our District in time for our District Conference in March 2010. If your club is interested in hosting any or both these teams, please contact District Chairman - GSE, PP M. Adamaly of RC of Colombo Mid Town.

With the presence of RI President 2006-2007 Rtn.W. Bill Boyd on 26th September, 2009, we witnessed a great participation (over 550) of Thailand, Indian and Sri Lankan Rotarians at
- “Foundation Night” on 26th September at the Water’s Edge, Battaramulla at 7.00 pm organized by the Rotary Club of Colombo.

The following special events also took place on this day :

1) Celebrate 80 years to Rotary in Sri Lanka
2) Felicitation to RI Director K.R. Ravindran
3) Release of DVD with Peace theme song
4) Nearly 40 Sister Club agreements were signed

DG Anand of RI Dist. 3230 – Chennai and DG Kishore Cherkumalli of RI Dis.3020 also graced this occasion with a group of 250 Rotarians and their families.

This project will also be a fund raiser and the profits derived would be sent to the Rotary Foundation equally divided among the Rotarians who participated in the “Foundation Night” along with a list of their names.

RI District 3230 Hosted Children from Ratnapura






30 Children aged between 9-14 years from Eheliyagada Dharmapala Primary School, Ratnapura along with a Teacher + a Parent visited Chennai on a scouting camp from 17th to 21st August 2009, and they were hosted by DG Anand and his club for a day out in Chennai.

District English Teacher Training programme (DETT)






This District English Teacher Training was a three (3) day residential workshop concluded on the 20th along with awards. This program was started on the 18th of August 2009, for trained English Teacher’s who are teaching from grade 6 – 10. This time we had 18 teachers across the Island.

The areas touched were new techniques in teaching, including practical sessions, improvements in the language and child psychology which is a very important area for our current teachers. Each participant was awarded a certificate by the District Governor by assessment criteria – an evaluation system where the teachers received special awards too for their outstanding performances in various activities.

Including accommodation with full board for 2 nights/ 3 days was at a nominal rate (Partly sponsored by the District 3220) at a very well known hotel at Bopath Ella Falls, (Minara Hotel).Kuruwita Where they’ enjoyed the nestling in natures beauty with the cascading bopath ella falls, the scenic mountains and the forest which enabled the participants to be trained in an informal environment, with relaxation and a lot of fun wrapped up in natures best and sure it will be a memorable one.

DG Suri was the Chief Guest for the closing event and witnessed the feedback of those teachers. He congratulated the Chairperson Rtn. Anusha Weragama, President Sujith Jayasuriya, Chief Trainer Rtn. Prasad Kodithuwakku and the members of Ratnapura Club for the great job done for the second time and he requested the club to continue this program as an annual project.

RI DISTRICT 3220 - DISTRICT CITATION


2009 / 2010 – “The Future of Rotary Is In Your Hands”

Rotary clubs are called upon to show that, The future of Rotary is in Rotarians hands, during the year 2009-2010. Rotary Clubs in our District will be recognized by way of a District Citation if they were to achieve all mandatory eight goals and three optional goals by 31st March, 2010.

A) MANDATORY GOALS (All eight goals are mandatory)

1) Achieve the Membership Development Goal as follows :
Net membership gain of 4 new members or sponsoring a new Rotary Club

2) Achieve the Contribution / Rotary Foundation Goal as discussed and agreed between the respective Club President and the District Governor

3) Undertake a minimum of three projects in any of the following :
- Provide shelter to the needy – Low cost housing
- Provide sanitation to the needy – Low cost toilets
- Provide water to the needy
- Eye care
- AIDS awareness
- Environment protection
- Employment for disabled
- Drug abuse prevention
- Functional literacy
- Self employment
- Health and Hunger

4) Full representation of the Board at the District Assembly to be held in May 2009 duly certified by the District Secretary

5) Registration at the District Conference to be held in February 2010 to be as follows :
a) Clubs with a membership of 50 or below – Minimum 60 percent
b) Clubs with a membership of over 50 – Minimum 40 percent

6) To register at least three Rotarians for each of the District Seminars

7) Undertake at least one activity to enhance the public image of Rotary or your Rotary Club. (eg. By placing a supplement in the Newspapers, News Releases, publicity in Electronic Media, Web Pages, Rotary News, Rotarian Magazine, Rotary World, etc)

8) Invite Rotary Foundation Alumni to address a meeting and / or propose for Rotary membership. Alternately invite a Community leader to address a regular Club meeting.


B) OPTIONAL GOALS (Any three goals are to be achieved)

1) Sponsor a new Rotaract / Interact Club or Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA) or take over an existing Rotaract / Interact Club

2) Sponsor a Rotary Community Service Corps

3) Register a project with the World Community Service Projects Exchange

4) Actively participate in the International Youth Exchange or Group Study Exchange Programme during the year by sponsoring and hosting exchange participants

5) Hold a program dedicated to Rotary Recreational and Vocational Fellowships

6) Obtain a Foundation Matching Grant to support a project

7) Carry out a project / program towards ethnic and communal harmony. The inclusion of children would be duly acknowledged.

8) Conduct a program / fellowship activity that brings smiling faces, happiness to children afflicted with life threatening illnesses (cancer, etc)

9) Highlight the importance of the family of Rotary by appointing a committee in your club and implement at least 3 meetings / activities / events involving Rotarians families, Rotaractors, Interactors, widows and widowers of former Rotarians and others.

District Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA) Program in August 2009



The theme for this year’s RYLA is "Unleash Your True Potential" . The Course Director, Rtn. Nalaka Hewamadduma - a renowned trainer on People Development - will be conducting this exciting leadership program. It is open to male and female Rotaractors and prospective Rotaractors aged 18-30 years. Uptown female Rotarians would act as chaperons for female participants. This 3 day / 2 night residential program would be on from the mid afternoon on Friday 14th August to mid afternoon on Sunday 16th August at Induruwa Beach Resort, Induruwa, Bentota and is limited to 75 participants. Each Rotary Club is eligible to nominate two candidates - preferably Rotaractors - The registration fee per Rotaractor is Rs.5,000/- and a non-Rotaractor Rs.5,500/- inclusive of transport from Lanka Hands, Bambalapitiya to the venue and back. Rotary 2009-10: District Membership Seminar

The District Membership Seminar for the Rotary year 2009-10 will be held on Sunday, 14th June 2009, from 9.00a.m. to 1.00p.m. at ExcelWorld, Colombo 10, followed with lunch. The Seminar is open to all Rotarians interested. Registration cost - Rs.1,000/-. Minimum 3 Rotarians per club are expected to register.
PURPOSE OF THE DISTRICT MEMBERSHIP SEMINAR: Rotary Int'l requires a growing and sustainable membership base in order to meet the increasing need for volunteer services throughout the world and to secure the future of each Rotary Club. The seminar will support Club & District efforts to sustain and increase their membership base.
